7 для отвода глаз
разг.as a blind (decoy); just for show; to divert attention from smth.- Идиотское время! - раздумчиво говорил он. - Вот, влопались в новую войну. Воюем, как всегда, для отвода глаз от собственной глупости; воевать с глупостью не умеем, нет сил. (М. Горький, Дело Артамоновых) — 'Idiotic times!' he said thoughtfully. 'Now we've let ourselves in for another war. The same as always - we go to war to divert attention from our own stupidity; and we haven't got the sense or the power to go to war against stupidity.'
Хотя карты строго воспрещены, но, разумеется, у каждого под матрацем колода, и сейчас, пользуясь бесконтрольностью, дуются. Для отвода глаз, на столе целая фортеция библиотечных книг, и по жребию выбранный читает вслух. (О. Форш, Одеты камнем) — Although cards were strictly forbidden, every cadet naturally had a deck under his mattress, and taking advantage of the unsupervised hours, they played away. We had a whole stack of library books on the table as a blind and drew lots to see who was to read aloud.
Сашка действительно давал мне деньги для передачи крёстной, хотя все хорошо понимали, что деньги тут ни при чём, что даются они лишь для отвода глаз. (М. Исаковский, На Ельнинской земле) — And indeed Sashka gave me money for my godmother, but this was just for show.

DDT
A persistent organochlorine insecticide, also known as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, that was introduced in the 1940s and used widely because of its persistence (meaning repeated applications were unnecessary), its low toxicity to mammals and its simplicity and cheapness of manufacture. It became dispersed all over the world and, with other organochlorines, had a disruptive effect on species high in food chains, especially on the breeding success of certain predatory birds. DDT is very stable, relatively insoluble in water, but highly soluble in fats. Health effects on humans are not clear, but it is less toxic than related compounds. It is poisonous to other vertebrates, especially fish, and is stored in the fatty tissue of animals as sublethal amounts of the less toxic DDE. Because of its effects on wildlife its use in most countries is now forbidden or strictly limited. (Source: MGH / ALL)
